Elon Musk X: What life is like on a super-app in Asia

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.Infomation Guide Nigeria

The Nigerian government banned Twitter in the country more than a year ago, after the company removed a message from President Muhammadu Buhari. It accused the corporation of permitting content that posed a security risk to Nigeria.

After disregarding public outrage for months, the administration removed the restriction in January.

Multiple times, the Buhari administration has pledged to regulate social media. In June, it presented a proposed set of regulations that, according to the government, would govern the operations of international social media businesses.

The rule mandates, among other things, that companies remove content deemed by the government to threaten national security

Grab is not the only game in town, however.

Super-apps abound, ranging from Indonesia’s GoJek to India’s PayTM, and they enable you to do even more, such as arrange a manicure, order gasoline for your motorcycle, pay your traffic fine, and buy gold.

They have taken off in an area of digital natives; in South East Asia alone, over three-quarters of the population uses the internet, and 88% of those individuals use a smartphone.

Then there’s China’s WeChat, the original Asian super-app rumoured to be the inspiration for Mr. Musk’s X.

It is a messaging and social networking platform that has become one of the region’s largest apps in terms of its service offerings and user base. It is believed that in China alone there are 1.29 billion users.

WeChat is also one of China’s largest payment networks, with users paying for goods and services and sending money to one another using the app.

A third of a Chinese user’s waking day may be devoted to WeChat alone, according to some research.

Much has been written on WeChat’s transformation into a tool of surveillance and censorship as a result of its pervasiveness in Chinese daily life and its operation in a society in which the government exerts strict control.

Messages, messages, and even accounts are often blocked for politically sensitive content, and there are concerns that this may contribute to China’s notorious “social credit” systems, in which citizens’ life might be regulated depending on their bank credit scores or social behaviour.

Other Top Stories:

WeChat implemented its own scoring system in 2020, whereby users with high in-app credit records receive additional privileges.

WeChat exemplifies the primary problem with super-apps: since everyone does almost everything on a handful of platforms, these apps amass a massive wealth of personal information and potentially have influence over our daily life.

In countries where privacy is highly valued, the treatment of such data and the amount to which governments should have access to it will be a topic of discussion. Some individuals may view Mr. Musk’s X superapp as a Swiss Army knife with two blades if it comes to fruition.

Others, on the other hand, are willing to make a trade-off for the comfort and simplicity of living on a single app. Those with significant privacy concerns always have the option of reducing their usage.

And in free markets, speciality applications will continue to compete for users’ attention, decreasing the probability that the majority of the data would wind up in the hands of just a few corporations – one reason for WeChat’s prominence in China is because Twitter and WhatsApp are forbidden there .Jamb Result

I do not use Grab exclusively in Singapore. It’s not that I lack confidence in it, but I prefer to utilise specialised applications for other tasks, such as grocery shopping and clothing shopping, because they’re simply superior.

Grab doesn’t know everything about me; it only knows a few things, such as the fact that I enjoy durian delivery
