Google finally shuts down instant messaging platform, Hangouts after 9 years

Google has announced that its instant messaging programme, Hangouts, has been replaced by Google Chats, a similar and enhanced messaging application.Information Guide Nigeria

Google said earlier this year that it will discontinue Hangouts in favour of Google conversations, a Slack-like instant messaging tool geared for enterprises.

In May 2013, the cross-platform instant messaging service Hangouts was created as a text, video, and voice chat application. It was a Google+ service that Gmail users could utilise if they desired a quick response rather than sending an email.

It eventually became a standalone product in 2013 and incorporated features from Google+ Messenger and Google Talk. Hangouts was officially discontinued on November 1, 2022, nine years after its inception, after amassing approximately five billion playstore downloads.

Google discontinued the service on its Android and iOS platforms in July of this year, marking the beginning of the retirement process. The final service, the online product, was recently retired, bringing an end to the product’s use on all electronic platforms.

However, the phased retirement of Hangouts did not come as a surprise to many users, as Google had already informed users and given some the option to migrate to the new service – Chat – in 2021.

Users were instructed to utilise another Google tool, Google Takeout, to download and store a duplicate of their Hangouts data. It was also vital to know that while migrating data from Hangouts, messages and contacts will be automatically transferred to Google Chat, but not all data will migrate.JAMB Result

Users can keep their Hangouts data until January 2023.
