Can Anyone Get the NYSC Certificate of Exemption?

The NYSC program is a mandatory program for all Nigerian graduates both within and outside the country and as such it’s not easy to get exempted from the program. The NYSC certificate of exemption is not for everyone, but only the select few who meet the requirements for it. Graduates who are given the right to apply for the NYSC exemption letter according to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Degree 1993 section 2 subsection (1) are Nigerian graduates who at the date of their graduation;

  1. He/she is above the age of thirty (30) years
  2. He/she has served in any branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces (Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Air Force) or in the Nigerian Police Force for more than nine (9) months
  3. He/she is a member or staff in any of the following organizations:
    1. The Nigerian Security Organization, or
    2. The National Intelligence Agency, or
    3. The State Security Service, or
    4. The Defence Intelligence Service
  4. He/she has been awarded with any National Honour.WAEC result

How to Apply for the NYSC Exemption Letter

To apply for the NYSC Exemption Letter (certificate of exemption) follow the instructions below:

  • Step 1: Visit the nearest National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) State Secretariat
  • Step 2: Upon getting there, let the attendant know you wish to apply for the NYSC exemption letter
  • Step 3: An application form for the NYSC exemption letter will be issued to you from the relevant department
  • Step 4: Fill the application form issued to you with your correct details and attest it with your signature
  • Step 5: Attach the required documents needed to obtain the exemption letter. The documents required include:
    1. Completed application form
    2. Documents showing academic qualifications
    3. Approved result
    4. Applicants identity document
    5. Supporting documents (as instructed)
  • Step 6: Now submit the application form with the attached documents to the NYSC official presentJAMB form
  • Step 7: You will be required to make a payment as directed by the officials
  • Step 8: After making the payment, your application will be submitted and forwarded for verification and validation
  • Step 9: Your application will be approved once the validation and verification process has been completed.
  • Step 10: You will be notified once your Exemption letter is ready to be collected. However, you will be required to collect the certificate from your tertiary institution.

How to Get the NYSC Exemption Letter for NOUN Graduates

Graduates from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) can apply for the NYSC exemption letter by following the procedures below:

  • Step 1: Visit the official NYSC portal via Https://portal.nysc.org.ng
  • Step 2: Click on “Check senate list or its equivalents” to confirm if your name is on the list
  • Step 3: Now return back to the NYSC homepage to continue the procedure
  • Step 4: Click on “Mobilization Batch” icon
  • Step 5: Click on “Fresh Registration” and you will be redirected to a new page where you’ll be able to initiate the account creation
  • Step 6: Enter the required details into the spaces made available and click on “ Continue
  • Step 7: You will be required to verify your email address
  • Step 8: Click on the link sent to your mail to confirm email address and continue with the NYSC account creation/registration
  • Step 9: Enter the required details into the spaces made available and click on “submit and continue” (click on Part-time to ignore JAMB regularization no.)
  • Step 10: You will be required to make payment for the procedure. Select your preferred method on the portal to continue
  • Step 11: Make the required payment to continue. The required payment is usually less than N3,000
  • Step 12: Now check your NYSC dashboard to see if your exemption letter has been made available for immediate printing. If not, you can check after a few days, then make the printoutJAMB Result
