The defendant, who was presented as a witness by U.E. Udo, the defense attorney, stated that he was not a party to the case.

According to him, a man named Ndubuisi requested a delivery vehicle capable of transporting 33,000 litres of kerosene, but he was unable to fulfill the request.

He said, “He sent one Morris to meet me. That day, I was sitting with Mr Peter (co-defendant). I told Morris that I didn’t have what Ndubuisi asked for. Mr Peter said he had a truck of 33,000 litres.”

Bassey stated that his involvement ended when Mr. Peter called the truck’s owner, who then gave the truck to Ndubuisi, and that Ndubuisi and his escorts filled kerosene into the container before leaving.

Two days later, Ndubuisi reportedly called him to complain that he was unable to reach the driver.

On the following Monday, he received an identical complaint, he observed.

When the truck and 33,000 litres of kerosene went missing, the witness stated that union officials and the police were notified.

Bassey stated that the police remanded him and Peter on Monday and instructed Ndubuisi to appear on Tuesday; however, he did not appear until Friday.

“The owner of the kerosene told the police to lock up Ndubuisi because he was the one that diverted the product. The DPO said he was going to lock him up that Friday because he also had not shown up since Monday.

“But Ndubuisi called SARS operatives. They came that Friday evening and took us to their base in Ikeja, where I and Peter were remanded for two weeks,” Bassey added.JAMB Result
