Meaning of a Manager

A manager is someone whose job is to organize and control the work of a business organization. A manager is also responsible for controlling a group of staff in an organization.

In most organizations, a manager acts as the bridge between senior management staff and junior level staff. A manager performs the following basic roles which are planning, controlling, organizing, staffing and directing. Simply, a manager performs all the functions of management.

Types of Manager

A lot of us have encountered many types of managers in the organization where we work. These managers have different characteristics which define them and the functions they perform.

a. Purchase Manager

As the name implies, a purchase manager s responsible for either purchasing or procuring raw materials to be used for producing  goods and products.

b. Human Resources Manager

He/She is the manager that oversees the Human Resources department. He/She presides over functions like the hiring and firing of staff, payroll, daily staff attendance.

Product Development Manager

The product development manager manages the development of a new product/service, technical design of a new product. He/She oversees the management and innovation of new products.

c. Marketing Manager

As the name implies, the marketing manager supervises the marketing, advertisement and promotion of company goods, products and services.

d. Finance Manager

The finance manager handles the financial matters of a company.

e. Production Manager

The production manager supervises the production of new goods and products.

f. IT Manager

The IT Manager handles all ICT matters of an organization.

Functions of a Manager

Functions of a Manager refers to the different roles played by a manager. Essentially, a manager performs seven functions which are planning, organizing, staffing, leading, coordinating, reporting, budgeting and controlling.

a. Planning

A manager is tasked with the responsibility of planning the work schedule. He/She explains how the work is to be done.He/She provides the template of the work flow.

To plan, a manager must ensure that the entire staff participate actively at the inception of project .Simply, a manager looks ahead and forecasts the outcome of a project.

b. Organizing

A manager must be able to allot tasks/jobs to the appropriate staff. Organizing involves having good working structures in an organization.

c. Staffing

A manager groupie people into different teams and all its tasks to them based in their competencies.

d. Heading

A manager gives leadership to his/her staff.He/She gives them direction and guidance on what is to be done and how to do the tasks allotted to them effectively and without delay. By guiding staff, avenues for conflicts are prevented.

e. Coordinating

A manager coordinates or harmonized all activities of the employees. Coordination brings motivation, discipline and excellent performance of staff across departments in an organization. Coordinating staff requires excellent leadership and communication skills.

f. Reporting

The employees report activities on various tasks allotted to them by a manager. The manager in turn gives update to the higher management authorities. It is the responsibility of the manager to keep updated information on all tasks allotted to the down supports.

g. Controlling

A manager ensures that everything is under control in an organization. A manager makes sure that everything I going according to plan.

Problems of Nigeria Managers:

1. Maximizing Scarce Resources

Most companies have scarce or limited resources to be used to achieve company goals and objectives. A manager is often confronted with the problem of scarce resources at his/her disposal to execute projects.

Consequently, a manager is put between the paradox of deploying scarce resources to get the job done and the job of providing excellent results for an organization.

2. Achieving Corporate Goals

Nigerian managers face the challenge of achieving set out corporate goals and objectives because they do not know how best to deploy staff and the resources at their disposal to achieve results. Most managers do not know how to motivate people to work and focus on details that important.

3. Daily Improvement

An organization that improves daily motivates a manager and brings out the best in the staff. However, most Nigerian managers work in organizations where there is no room for improvement daily.

One of the attributes of a good organization  is that it always seeks improvement. Hence, most Nigerian managers get frustrated for the lack of improvement in their organizations.

They lose motivation and focus to work. Some Nigerian manager even get to the point where they have no idea of how to improve the way things work in an organization.

4. Dealing with Employees that Perform Below Par

Nigerian managers work with different staff with different attitudes and dispositions to work. Some employees will do their best while other employees will under perform.

The activities and outputs of the under performing employees will affect the outputs of the manager and his ability to achieve corporate goals and objectives.

In critical cases, the under performing employees under performs constantly. This may lead to the eventual sack of the manager if he/she does not take steps to manage and counsel the under performing staff or ease them out of the organization.

5. Crisis Management

Most Nigerian managers experience crises management problems. They  can plan for the smooth running of the organization but sometimes, they cannot rule out the occurrence of crises.

Most Nigerian managers are thrown off balance. They do not  know how to react in cases of emergencies because They do not have a second option or backup plan to deal with emergencies. They lack crises management skills.

6. Hiring the Right People

Nigerian managers find it difficult to hire the right people for the right jobs. Most Nigerian managers do not have an understanding of how an employee will perform when hired.

Often, they hire new people based on their performance in the interview and not based on how they can actually do the work.

7. Bringing Out the Best in Employees

Nigerian managers face the problem of bringing out the best in their staff daily. This is because employees have their good days and off days.The challenge is to identify their off days and motivating them to give their best.

8. Effective Communication

Nigerian managers find it difficult to communicate clearly with their employees. They lack excellent communication skills. Often, Nigerian managers communicate with their staff using harsh and rude language.

Most Nigerian managers are autocratic, overbearing and annoyingly micromanage and micro supervise their employees. They shout at them and this affects their morale negatively.

Effective Communication ensures that the employee’s hear from their manager and they also want to their manager to hear their opinions, suggestions and ideas.

9. Time Management

Nigerian managers have the unenviable task of managing people under them and doing their own jobs too.

10. Pressure to Perform

Nigerian managers experience the pressure to perform well daily. This because they know that it is an opportunity to show people that they deserve to be the manager.

Also, they know that failure to perform well will lead to demotion, sack from the organization. Most Nigerian managers cannot cope with the pressure of performing well daily.

Again, they do not set realistic expectations with the higher management.This makes them to under perform under pressure..

Possible Solutions

a. Nigerian managers should motivate and counsel under performing staff. They must also carry them along to ensure they give their best at all times.

b. Nigerian managers must treat their employees with respect and help them to align their personal goals to their job goals.

c. Nigerian managers must be calm and confident when dealing with crises and emergencies. They must also have back-up plans to deal with emergencies.

d. When terminating an under performing staff’s employment, Nigerian managers must provide them with good serve dance packages.

e. Nigerian managers must use good selection processes to recruit new staff. They can give them work sample test to see how well they would do the work in real situation.

f. Nigerian managers must set realistic expectations with their management authorities. They should take time to plan properly.

g. Nigerian managers must ensure that that they hold meetings with their staff to set out clear cut objectives to achieve results.
