About WASSCE / WAEC

Before we go into the WAEC grading system for all subjects, let’s brush up on what we know about the West African Examination Council, WAEC.WAEC Grading Scheme for All Subjects

It is the official body that is responsible for administering WASSCE for candidates. WASSCE means the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

However, this examination is only offered to students in Anglophonic countries in West Africa. That is English-speaking West African countries.

What type of Examinations are Conducted by WAEC?

There are two main types of examination that are conducted by the West African Examination Council. They include:

1.    WASSCE May/June (SSCE)

This type of examination is popularly known as the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). It is taken by final year students in secondary school (SS3 students). Candidates for this type of examination are to come with their respective school uniforms.JAMB Form

This exam is usually conducted during the summer. That is, from April to May, and the results will be released by August.

2.    WASSCE Nov/Dec (GCE)

This type of examination is known as the General Certificate Examination (GCE). It is usually called WAEC GCE by many people. Candidates for this examination are not required to come with their uniforms, but a biometric registration procedure is compulsory just as in the former.Npower Recruitment

WAEC GCE is usually conducted during the autumn, that is during November, and the results are released by December. This exam is usually taken by students who wish to correct their deficiencies in their SSCE results.

Understanding the WAEC Grading Scheme 2022

The WAEC marking and grading system is comprised of grade A to F. These letters are used to show how good the result of a particular subject is. Thus, if you get an A, then that means you did absolutely great during the exam. To obtain this grade, candidate must score above 75% in the WAEC exam.WAEC Result

This means that, in a 100 questions subject, to get an A, you must answer 75 questions correctly.

In the WAEC grading system, the following letters and numbers are used to describe the performance of the exam.

  • A1 means Excellent.
  • B2 means Very Good.
  • B3 means Good.
  • C4 means Upper Credit.
  • C5 means Mid-Credit.
  • C6 means Lower Credit.
  • D7 means Pass.
  • D8 means Lower Pass.
  • F9 means Fail.

Current WAEC Grading Scheme and Interpretation (by Percentage)

Below is the current interpretation of the WAEC grading scheme for subjects:

  1. A1 is from 75% – 100%.
  2. B2 is from 70% – 74%.
  3. B3 is from 65%- 69%.
  4. C4 is from 60% – 64%.
  5. C5 is from 55% – 59%.
  6. C6 is from 50% – 54%.
  7. D7 is from 45% 49%.
  8. E8 is from 40% – 45%.
  9. F9 is from 0% – 39%.

How to Calculate WAEC Grading by Percentage

To calculate your possible WAEC grading score by percentage follow the instructions below:

  1. Count the number of questions you think are correct (pick only the ones you are sure of)
  2. Divide that number by the total number of questions you are asked to answer. It could be 100 questions or 50 questions.
  3. Now multiply that number by 100 to get the percentage value.
  4. From the percentage gotten, you can estimate what your possible WAEC score would be.
  5. For example, if you answered 40 questions correctly out of 60, your percentage would be: (40/60)x100% = 66.67% = B3.

NOTE: This procedure is used for the objective section, and cannot be used to determine the grading percentage for the theory Section.

For Theory Section:

To calculate the percentage grade for theory Section, you must first calculate the number of marks you are sure of obtaining in the theory Section, divided by the total number of marks, then multiply it by 100%.

That is, if you are expected to answer 5 questions, of which each carries 20 marks, then you can calculate your grade as follows.

If you are sure of getting 15 marks in each of the questions, out of the possible 20, then Calculate your percentage as follows:

  1. The total mark you are expecting to get is 15×4 = 60.
  2. The total possible number of marks you can get is 20×5 = 100.
  3. Then your percentage score will (60/100)x100% = 60% = C4.
