5G: MTN partners OEMs, others to reduce cost of mobile phones

MTN will launch this initiative in collaboration with Samsung, TECNO, Nokia, Infinix, and iTel, among others.

The goal of the project is to subsidise the cost of these mobile phones so that Nigerians can access 5G technology via these devices.Infomation Guide Nigeria

Since the rollout of 5G technology in August, the high cost of 5G-enabled phones has been cited as a hindrance to the project’s expansion.

According to an investigation by QuartzAfrica, the low purchasing power of 5G-enabled handsets and the high cost of data were cited as concerns that would jeopardise the rollout of 5G services in Nigeria and Africa.

It was also stated that the cheapest 5G-enabled smartphone on the continent was sold for approximately $300 (approximately N130,000 at the current exchange rate), which is quite costly for the average African.

MTN announced a partnership with Intelligra, a smartphone financing platform in Nigeria, the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Stanbic IBTC Bank, and Slot, a popular gadget retail store, to help Nigerians acquire 5G-enabled smartphones and pay for them over an extended period of time with no initial deposit.

According to MTN Nigeria’s chief marketing officer, Adia Sowho, the partnership with Intelligra began in January 2022, and the company has opened over 200 channel outlets where customers can walk in and obtain a 5G-enabled smartphone with no initial deposit and a plan to repay over time with airtime.

She noted that the company hopes to reach 1,000 daily transactions involving devices by 2023, with a primary emphasis on the Northern region.Jamb Result
