12 Functions Of The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation

The Nigerian broadcasting corporation is a Federal Government parastatal, established with the sole aim of monitoring licensees’ and broadcast content, this is very important, since some of the broadcast content could be some how insidious, therefore, there is need to monitor broadcast content, and conduct research in the area of broadcasting in order to come up with reliable information  to aid in the formulation of policy, as well as enhancing professional development in broadcasting industry.

1. Advises Federal Government

The Nigerian broadcasting corporation has a role to play in advising the federal government on some policies that have to do with national mass communication.

Generally, the government would want to know how the national mass communication policy could be implemented, as a broadcasting corporation, what the Nigerian broadcasting corporation does is to, in terms of implementing this policy, advise the federal government particularly, in the area of broadcasting. In such advice, reference must be made to broadcasting.

2. Considers Applications For Radio And Television Ownership

One of the statutory functions of the Nigerian broadcasting corporation is that of considering applications forwarded to the Nigerian broadcasting corporation for consideration by those intended to own radio stations or those intended to own television stations.

Such recommendations are made, when there are applications seeking licenses for radio and television ownership.

As a broadcasting corporation, what the Nigerian broadcasting corporation does is that it also regulates the activities of broadcasting industry.

Apart from regulating the activities of broadcasting industry, the Nigerian broadcasting corporation do controled the affairs of the broadcasting industry.

5. Undertakes Research And Development

There is national broadcasting code to be owned by every broadcasting station. So what the Nigerian broadcasting corporation does is to ensure that, there is this establishment of this national broadcasting code, and that, the national broadcasting code is well disseminated.

It is also the duty of the Nigerian broadcasting corporation to set up standards with respect to the content of broadcast. It is also incumbent on the Nigerian broadcasting corporation to determine the quality of what is to be broadcast.

13. Regulates Ethical Standard

Besides the regulation of the activities of the broadcasting industry, the Nigerian broadcasting corporation also regulates ethical standards, it regulates technical excellence in both public broadcasting stations and private broadcasting stations, including commercial broadcast stations in Nigeria. And the Nigerian broadcasting corporation do enforces total compliance to this ethical standard.
