ASUU: Varsities hold emergency meetings on resumption

Following the cessation of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Institutions, our correspondent discovered that public universities across the nation had scheduled special senate council meetings in preparation for upcoming exams and the resumption of classes.Infomation Guide Nigeria

In a statement released by the union’s national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union indicated that it had paused its strike in response to a court ruling, but stressing that the government had not met all of its demands.

Our source discovered that colleges will convene special meetings to discuss new academic calendars to replace the one that was disrupted by the strike.

The University of Benin has scheduled a special senate meeting for October 18, 2022, according to a document viewed by our correspondent.

The memo, which was signed by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, M.I. Owie, partly read, “The vice-chancellor, Prof Lilian Salami, has approved that the meeting of the provost, deans, and directors should be held at the senate chambers on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.”

The Federal University of Lafia announced in a memo that the senate council would convene on Monday (today), with the meeting’s objective being “reviewing the academic calendar.”

Other universities that have announced Senate Council meetings include Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife on October 18, 2022; the Federal University of Technology in Owerri on October 17, 2022; the Federal University of Dustin-Ma in Katsina on October 17, 2022; and the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture on October 17, 2022.

In the meantime, other universities, such as Sule Lamido University, have instructed students to begin classes immediately.

The university administration “encouraged students to return to school” in a memo sent to students and faculty.

Other universities that have announced resumption include TaiSolarin University of Education, University of Port-Harcourt, University of Calabar, and Bayero University Kano.
