What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a plastic surgery procedure that involves the transfer of fat from areas where they are in excess, to areas where the volume is deficient. The aim of this surgery is to augment or improve the shape or contour of the area in which the fat is being injected. Fat transfer is also referred to as fat grafting, fat injection, or lipomodelling.

Fat transfer uses a surgical technique called Liposuction. Liposuction is a plastic surgical procedure that involves the use of a suction technique to remove fats from certain areas of the body. The areas in which fats are commonly removed include the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, neck, and back. The removal of fats from these areas helps to improve the shape or contours of these areas. Fat Transfer Cost

History of fat transfer

The emergence of the fat transfer procedure dates back to the late 19th century. The first of its kind was carried out in 1893 by a German plastic surgeon named Gustav Neuber (1850-1932), who corrected scars formed from osteomyelitis by transferring fat from the arm region to the eye region. jamb result checker

Two years after the achievement of Gustav Neuber, another plastic surgeon Dr. Viktor Czerny (1842-1916) established symmetry in a breast following a unilateral partial mastectomy, by transferring a lipoma to the breast.

However, the fat transfer had trouble gaining acceptance in the past century due to the complications that came with the procedure. As at then, modern liposuction technique had not been standardized and also, the fats extracted via the procedure was usually of inconsistent quality, thus resulting in poor results. Things took a positive turn for fat grafting in the 1990s when Dr. Sydney Coleman, a Plastic Surgeon in New York City, began to publish papers that described standardized techniques for extracting fat, processing as well as injecting it. Since then, the popularity and patronage of fat transfer have been soaring high.

How Fat transfer is done

Fat transfer involves the extraction of fat from one part of the body, the washing, processing, and purification of the fat, and the subsequent re-injection of the purified fat into the areas that require augmentation with the aid of a specially designed needle. The fat grafting procedure may be repeated several times to achieve the desired result. The overall process involves three stages:

  1. Harvesting
  2. Purification and transfer
  3. Placement

Harvesting:

Harvesting involves the removal of fat from a selected site on the body. The patient and the surgeon will choose a site where the fat extraction will be done. The surgeon will then inject that site with a local anesthetic and then proceed to make a small incision. A cannula connected to a syringe will then be sterilely inserted into the site of the incision and the fat extracted via liposuction. WAEC timetable

Purification and transfer:

After the surgeon has gotten enough fat from the donor site, he or she will process the fats into a form that can be injected with a needle into the site that needs augmentation. Fat purification can be done either via centrifugation or filtration. A centrifuge will spin the fat to separate the impurities into a different layer.

Placement:

This is the stage where the actual augmentation is carried out. The acceptor area will be prepared by the surgeon. An incision will be made at such site and a needle or cannula inserted into it. The needle will be passed in and out of the acceptor area several times, depositing a line of fat in a natural tissue plane each time the needle is withdrawn.   ATBU College of Nursing Science Basic Nursing Admission List

This process will be repeated until the desired result is obtained. The surgeon might decide to massage the grafted area to create the desired contours, or he/she may just rely on the placement technique to produce the desired result.  The grafted area might get bandaged after the procedure.
