To seek a better livelihood, they came to California. Of the two, Giuseppe already had the knowledge of winemaking, this made it easier for him to secure a job as vineyard planter.

Shortly after that Giuseppe raise some money and borrowed to secure a sloppy land which was later known as the Jackass hill vineyard.

That land called jackass hill was a derogative word by the locals and his family. They’ll say, “only a jackass would farm a hill that steep” this was in 1887.

To them, nothing good could come from such a farm. However, that property became a household name and the brand known as Martinelli wine.
