The Regions in Ghana

The regions are the country’s first level of sub-national government administration within the Republic of Ghana. Currently, there are sixteen regions. This 16 regions can be subdivided into 216 local districts. However, this is mostly for administrative purposes.

In 1987, they formally established the former ten regional boundaries. The Upper West Region was established at this time. It was also designated as the state’s newest administrative region. 1.    The Greater Accra Region

Accra could be said to mean the Port City. This is known as the money-making machine. Accra also serves as the nation’s capital. It has the highest population density of any region in Ghana. It has a population of 4,010,054 people.

3.    The Eastern Region

4.    The Western Region

Sekondi-Tekoradi is the region’s capital. It is also located in Ghana’s southern region. It also has the Ivory Coast as one of its borders.

5.    The Ashanti Region

Kumasi is the capital. It encompasses a total surface area of 24,389 square kilometers. It is also the most populous region in Ghana.

6.    The Northern Region

7.    The Upper East Region

The region has 13 districts and is located in northern Ghana. The region is also the second smallest of the ten.

8.    The Upper West Region

9.    The Volta Region

The capital of this region is called  Ho. This is a multi-ethnic and multilingual area. Moreover, the region is also home to communities such as the Ewe, the Guan, and the Akan.

10. The Brong Ahafo Region

This is the second largest region among Ghana’s regions and capitals. It covers an area of 39,557 square kilometers. In addition, the region is bordered to the north by the Black Volta River and to the east by Volta Lake.

Suyani is the region’s capital. In addition, this region was formed from Bono State in 1958.

The Akans, Brongs, and Ahafo are the people who live there. The Brong Ahafo Region is divided into 21 districts and has a population of 2,310,983 people.

11. Oti Region

This is one of six newly created regions. On February 15, 2019, President Nana Akuffo-Addo declared Dambai as the administrative capital. Oti region is located in the heart of the Northern Region, Volta Region, and Volta Lake.

12. Western North Region

The capital of the Western North Region is Sefwi Wiawso. It covers approximately 2,391 square kilometers. This could amount to 10% of the country’s total land area.

It is also located in the Central Region, Ivory Coast, the Brong-Ahafo Region, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. Because it receives the most rainfall, it is the wettest region in Ghana and its districts.

It is also in the equatorial climatic zone, which is known for having reasonable temperatures. It has a population of 1,924,577 people.

13. North-East Region

This is one of the newer regions in Ghana. It is also located northern part of Ghana. Its capital is Nalerigu, which is located in the East Mamprusi Municipality.

14. Savannah Region

This region came to effect on 12th February 2019. Damongo is the capital of this new area. Islam is the most popular religion around this region. Also, its population is less dense compared to other parts.

15. Bono East Region

16. Ahafo Regio
