10 Solutions to Secession Agitation in Nigeria

Those agitating for secession in Nigeria are like some of the Israelites of the Bible who were agitating for a return to Egypt. Their agitation for the return to Egypt was because of the troubles they encountered on their way to the Promised Land. They forgot that they were slaves in Egypt, and that, their coming out of Egypt was freedom.Information Guide Nigeria

Agitators for secession in Nigeria have forgotten that the slave trade was the order of the day during the pre-colonial era. They have forgotten that there was a time when all the regions of Nigeria lived in their separate regions. They have forgotten why there was an amalgamation in 1914. They have forgotten that Nigeria did not exist as Nigeria from its beginning.

Solutions to Secession Agitation in Nigeria

  1. God’s Intervention

From one man, Adam, God created every nation of men. He determined their boundaries (Acts 17:26). One thing that Nigerians are yet to realize is God’s intervention in their problems. There are problems that only God can solve.

The nation of Israel realized this and it worked for them. When the Egyptians started to punish them and enslave them, they cried to God (Exodus 3:9). God heard their cry and sent Moses to deliver them. When Moses arrived, no power could hold him back because the Almighty God was behind him. By God’s intervention, he brought the Israelites out of slavery.

Like the Israelites, Nigerians are facing internal slavery after the British have delivered them from that of the external. The solution now is God’s intervention.

  1. Lawmakers

Laws now govern Nigeria. The lawmakers make these laws. The laws they make can save Nigeria from any problem it is facing.

The problem Nigeria has is that it has lawmakers who are not ready to serve its citizens. Were the lawmakers ready to serve Nigeria as it should be, Nigeria will not have secession agitations. People are agitating for their own country because they see Nigeria as a country that has myriads of problems. The laws made by the lawmakers of this country can solve the problems that are causing the agitations.

  1. Dialogue

People are agitating for secession because they are grieved. Effective dialogue can quell all the grievances. Come to a round table and table all the grievances. Then, come to a compromise. All the agitations for secession in Nigeria will cease.Npower Recruitment

The federal government should be ready to listen to all parties. The problem we have in Nigeria is that its leaders promise heaven and earth when they are to be elected. After their election, they abandon those who elected them. The father who does not listen to the cry of his children is bad father.

The federal government, being the father of all the ethnic groups in the nation, should be ready to listen to all of them. Let all demands be debated in the chambers and let whatever they arrive at remain.

Fortunately, all the regions of Nigeria are represented in the chambers. These representatives should be able to speak for their people. The rest should concur as is fit. If this is done effectively, all the agitations for secession in Nigeria will cease.

  1. True Federalism

Nigeria is a federation. As a federation, it should practise true federalism. Nigeria is not the only federation in the world. What is working for other federations should also work for Nigeria.JAMB Form

In true federalism, the constitution is supreme. Therefore, the Nigerian constitution should be held above all other things. If the present constitution needs any amendment, let it be amended accordingly. Then, let the constitution take its place.

Another thing that makes for true federalism is power-sharing. Let the states in Nigeria take care of the matters that concern them and let the federal government take care of the matters that concern it.

Here comes the supremacy of the judiciary. The judiciary should give true interpretation to the constitution and the laws of the land without fear or favour. Thus, all grievances would be rightly interpreted according to the constitution. The moment this is done, every agitation for secession will stop because people will be satisfied with what is going on in the country. This is how it is in other federations.

  1. Restructuring

The term restructuring has been given so many interpretations. The true interpretation should be looking at what is not working for us as a federal state and throwing it away. As it has been in the beginning, so it is, and so shall it be forever cannot work here.

Our peaceful co-existence has been experimented upon for years now. The question now is how is it thus far? Whatever is threatening our peaceful co-existence should be jettisoned.

Nigeria is a country with many cultures. Culture has been defined as the total way of life of a people. To throw away one’s culture is not easy. So, all cultures should be respected.JAMB Result

Restructuring should not be interpreted as imposing on others what is not meant for them. Some people are afraid of restructuring because they think they will be cheated. No! Take what belongs to you and let others take what belongs to them, period.

Those agitating for secession are doing so because they feel cheated. They feel that they will have all things when they are in their own country. As for, whatever they generate will all be theirs. The restructuring will take care of this and quell all secession agitations.

  1. Equitable Distribution of Generated Revenue

The truth is that not all states in Nigeria generate the same amount of revenue for the federal government. Equity demands that those who generate more revenue should have more than those who generate less revenue. The moment the states that generate more revenue are given less than they generate jealousy will set in. instead, they want to control their wealth. They feel that others are enjoying their wealth. The next thing is agitation for secession so that they can control all that they have. Therefore, equitable distribution of generated revenue will end all such agitations.

  1. Stop the Killings

One thing that is causing agitation for secession in Nigeria is the incessant killings of people in different parts of the country. Unless these killings stop, such agitations will not stop.

The lawmakers can come to our aid here. Let the law be made that whoever kills should be killed. God, the creator of humankind supports such laws when He says, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man” (Genesis 9:6).

  1. Presidency Rotation

It is cheating on other regions for only one region to be producing the president all year round. Whatever is good for the geese should also be good for the gander. All regions should taste the presidency.

Some people are agitating for their country because they want to rule. All such agitations will stop the moment they start to rule.

  1. Tolerance

Since Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation, only tolerance can make all the cultures co-exist peacefully. Even twins do not behave in the same way. Human beings are not made to behave alike. Tolerating one another is the key to peaceful co-existence.

Nigerians should learn to tolerate one another. The only thing is that we should not hurt one another. You should not continue to kill me and expect me to keep tolerating you. Give me the peace that I need and I will continue to tolerate you.

  1. International Community Interventions

The international community exists for something. The different countries help one another. Thus, if Nigeria cannot help itself, other countries can help it out.WAEC Result

So, where all the above fail, let us call upon our neighbours to come and hear what we are hearing. Let them come and see what we are seeing. Let us take the pictures of those that are killed to them whether they will like it. Let us take the pictures of our crops that have been destroyed to them whether they will like it. Let us take the pictures of our wives that are raped to them whether they will like it.

Conclusion

No problem in the world defies solution. All problems have solutions when tackled aright. Secession agitation in Nigeria is a problem. Let us tackle it aright and we shall have the right solution to it. Secession is not the right solution to the problems in Nigeria. Let us identify our problems and solve them accordingly.
