Vehicle registration has been a mandatory process in Nigeria. As stipulated in the law, one must register his or her automobile before being cleared to ply the roads in Nigeria and failure to do so leads you to the danger of being trapped, arrested and probably facing the law.
One can still ply the roads with his or her vehicle without a registration number for a certain period of time but must have covering papers to show for, that’s in the case of a new vehicle and it usually lasts for a very limited period of time maybe 30 days at most.
Plate numbers come at different prices and it solely depends on the state of registration as different states have rarely shared the price tag. The regular plate number ranges from 45 to 70 thousand though most states charge N50,000 customized plate numbers are issued at a much higher price.
Well, while this article is about the cost of a new plate number in Nigeria, we must also put you through the various processes you may likely pass through before acquiring one.
So, What are the procedures for getting a plate number in Nigeria?
Step 1: The very first stage is getting a driver’s license if you don’t have one, but if you do, just go straight to the second stage.
NOTE: you can get a driver’s license without even having a car
Here is how to get a driver’s license; just take a walk to federal road safety commission (FRSC) office close to where you are and apply for a driver’s license. Your biometric data will be captured and a sum of N10,000 will be paid by you to the commission. You will be given a temporary pass of which usually last for 60 days but before then your driver’s license must have been ready as it normally takes not more than two weeks.
Step 2: The second stage is the state board of internal revenue/Motor licensing authority SBIR/MLA registration, but that’s only if you have your driver’s license already.
On arrival at the state board of internal revenue/Motor licensing authority SBIR/MLA office, you will be given several forms to complete which include, allocation of plate number form, Auto vehicle license form, Form B, Federal Road Safety Form FRSC and Tax Form.
Fill completely all the required details on the form given to you, attach originals of your documents to the form and submit.

Still, at the SBIR/MLA office, your car may be required for inspection (physical inspection) and if it meets the minimum requirement then you will issue a roadworthiness certificate that serves you until your plate number is ready.
At this stage, all the filled forms will be forwarded to the police where the officer in charge of license verification will then verify by stamping and signing where necessary if the submitted document meets the required standard.
The next stage is the payment, you will have to pay N50,000 at the bank, that’s for the plate number itself and that is in the case of the usual (most common) plate number.
After payment, you will be asked to present the receipts to your payment. After going through your receipt(s), you will be handed a proof of ownership certificate number plus a vehicle identification tag (VIT).
Your original documents submitted earlier will be returned to you, it’s necessary you go through all the documents before going with it to avoid missing document.
What Are These Documents as Required by SBIR/MLA?
Various documents are required to complete this registration like we told you earlier. Here are the documents required for registration.
