How to Improve NYSC Scheme in Nigeria

The National Youth Service Corps program is described by most people as a tasking and difficult experience. Especially those posted far away from their place of residence. The NYSC program begins with a three (3) weeks orientation camp, where corps member would undergo serious military training before leaving for their place of primary assignment (PPA). Some of the major problems corps members face during their service year include security, low monthly allowance, and ethnic differences.Information Guide Nigeria

However, not everyone gets approved for a redeployment. How to Improve the NYSC Scheme

In this post, I’ve identified 4 critical areas that needs improvement in the NYSC scheme. These areas include:

1.   NYSC Monthly Allowance

During the NYSC program, corps members are deployed to various states in the federation. However, the states corps members are deployed to is different from their state of residence. Most times, corps member are sent to a location very far from their residence. Hence, surviving in a new place, with just the N30,000 monthly allowance is very difficult. With the continuous rise in the cost of living, it is only natural for the federal government to increase the monthly allowance for corpers to help them better their nation.WAEC Result

2.   Better Place of Primary Assignment (PPA)

The NYSC program is supposed to provide corps member with quality experience while serving their nation. But that doesn’t seem to be the case most times. What experience can someone who’s a graduate of civil engineering gain from a primary school in the north? Not sufficient enough.Npower Recruitment

Teaching profession is a sacred profession that means so much more than just giving lecture in class. However, 90% of corps member are sent to the class room for experience. The federal government should engage the public and private sector in the NYSC scheme. Graduate of engineering should be sent to where they can gain quality experience, same goes for other professions. With that, corps member would look forward to the NYSC program with a smile on their face.JAMB Form

3.   Improve the SAED Program

The NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Department (SAED) is in charge of the skill acquisition/ Entrepreneurship and empowerment program in the NYSC. Sadly, the SAED Program is not effective enough. Corps members are only given 3 weeks of training during the camp, and afterwards they receive no more training.NYSC Scheme in Nigeria

The program also demands corps members to spend the little they have which is usually not enough for them in the program. The SAED Program should be revamp in other for the program to achieve its intended goal.Things to buy for expecting mothers

4.   Reduce Fees & Charges

The numerous fees and charges associated with the NYSC scheme is another issue facing corps member. The monthly allowance is already not enough to sustain them, hence, adding more fees and charges would only make them suffer more in the strange land they find themselves.JAMB Result
