Challenges of Nigeria Supreme Court

1. Absolute Power

The cry of the brother Justices against their lord has proven the fact that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is supreme, next to God in Nigeria.

Every other person is responsible to him with him being responsible to no one. This makes his power to be an absolute power, the power that has made him do whatever he likes.

How is this problem for the Supreme Court? It is a problem because other Justices can no longer accommodate him. When they see him enjoying himself with his wife and children to their neglect, they feel sad. Before they cried out to the public, they have endured beyond what they can bear further.

He is the corruption of absolute power. Who will come to their aid when they are above all other people? They have the power to judge others; nobody has the power to judge them. They have no alternative to judging themselves.

Nigerians are watching to see what will become of the only apex court in the country. Will the Justices put down tools? On the other hand, will they resolve their problems themselves and live up to expectations? The choice is theirs. They have absolute power. Let them now use their absolute power in a way that will bring glory to Nigeria and not shame.

2. Credibility Gap

Happenings in the Supreme Court of Nigeria are making it lose its credibility. The credibility gap between what the Justices say and what they do is so wide that many Nigerians wonder what is becoming of the Supreme Court they once trusted.

Nigerian Supreme Court Justices have failed to prove the infallibility of their personality. All that they had gone through before they became Justices of the Supreme Court ought to make them infallible. They are humans we agree but proven humans by law.

No Judge becomes a Supreme Court Justice overnight. It takes a long process. Climbing up to that office proves that someone has some credibility. Once he loses that credibility, people will begin to look down upon his office. This is the problem of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. People have started to look down upon the so much elevated Court.

3. The Federal Government

The Federal Government is one of the problems that the Supreme Court has. Nobody doubts the fact that the Supreme Court is independent. Yet, not independent of the Federal Government. If a Supreme Court Justice is earning N500, 000.00 as against the N14, 000, 000.00 that a Senator earns per month, who is above who?

When we talk of underfunding the Supreme Court, who underfunds it? The Federal Government is the problem of whatever monetary problem that the Supreme Court has. Nobody expects a Supreme Court Justice to use his money to conduct research for the case he is handling. Thus, the Federal Government is the cause of the ineffectiveness of the Supreme Court.

If the Supreme Court is the highest Court in Nigeria, it should also be the highest funded in Nigeria. The Federal Government should make Supreme Court Justices proud of themselves and the country they serve because their job is not an easy one.

Anybody going to the Supreme Court is going there because he knows he can get justice there. Therefore, disappointing him for lack of effectiveness is hopeless.

4. Poor Leadership

Poor leadership is a problem in the Supreme Court of Nigeria. A good leader is someone who leads by example. The moment a leader’s subjects begin to point an accusing finger at him; his leadership becomes a bad one. The complaints of the brother Justices prove that their leader is not leading them well. A leader who eats alone is a bad one.

5. Poor Welfare

A letter that the other Justices wrote to the Chief Justice proves that they are suffering from poor welfare. How can a Justice be appointed without accommodation? If he has no good vehicle, how can he go to work?

It is pertinent that the Justices of the federation should be well taken care of. It is only by so doing that they can discharge their duties well. 6. Lack of Equipment

7. Corruption

The Chief Justice does not let other Justices know what he does. It is for this reason that they gossip about him and write against him.
