Ways of Improving the Supreme Court in Nigeria

  1. Reformation

The Supreme Court in Nigeria is overdue for reformation. Everything about the Supreme Court should be overhauled. The Justices should be retrained to meet international standards.

Recent happening in the Supreme Court that made the brother Justices write a protest letter to their lord proves that the lawmakers should revisit the office of the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice seems to have too much power. He seems to have the power to do, as he likes. Such power should be removed from him.

There should be a change in how the Supreme Court Justices are appointed. Any Justice of the Supreme Court who does not have the necessary training and skills should be replaced.

  1. Adequate Funding

The position of the Supreme Court is a critical one. It is a place of last resort for Nigerians. Any loss there is a total loss. As such, the Federal Government cannot leave the Supreme Court underfunded. Not funding the Supreme Court adequately can lure the Justices to justice perversion. They will begin to sell favour to the highest bidder. When this happens, Nigeria is finished.WAEC Result

The position of the Supreme Court in Nigeria demands that the Justices should not lack anything. They should be happy at all times. It is when they are happy that they can deliver fair judgement.

The Supreme Court should always have enough money to take care of the Justices who serve this great country there. A situation where Justices cry about poor welfare is uncalled for. Nobody should tamper with his or her welfare. Doing so is throwing the whole country into jeopardy.

  1. Accountability

Being independent should not mean a lack of accountability. The Supreme Court is always well represented in the national budget. The Supreme Court should in turn report to the person who provided it fund how the given fund was spent. Where possible, all Nigerians should know how the money that comes to the Supreme Court is used.

  1. Fund Generation

Every government parastatal depending on the Federal Government is what is killing Nigeria. Nigeria, itself, does not have means of generating funds apart from oil. Thus, when it needs money, it increases the price of fuel to the detriment of Nigerians. This is why Nigerians cannot progress. Whatever they have, they spend on fuel and food.JAMB Result

The Supreme Court should devise means of generating its own money. It is called Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). It should not depend solely on the Federal Government for every spending that it has.

How can it do that? This is where innovation comes in. For instance, the Supreme Court can create bookshops where law books are sold. The gains from the sales belong to the court. It can also have a special school for intending Justices and make it compulsory that nobody becomes a Justice in the nation without passing through this school. The money generated from the school belongs to the court. Thus, money is always available to the court, the Federal Government funding notwithstanding.

  1. Corruption Eradication

If we must improve the Supreme Court, we must eradicate corruption from it. Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, in 1989, said: “The Supreme Court is final because it is infallible and infallible because it is final”.

Infallibility is not the characteristic of corrupt people. Our problem in Nigeria is corruption, not lack of money. There is money in Nigeria but corrupt people will not allow that money to work for Nigeria.

When our leaders go to borrow money from World Bank, they go to borrow the money they will see to steal. Nigeria continues to service debts endlessly. This is what is killing Nigeria.JAMB Form

In the same vein, there is money in the Supreme Court but corrupt leaders will not allow even the brother Justices to see it. The result is a cry for funds. Nobody gives an account of what was got and what was spent for us to see whether there is a balance or not. All that we hear of is there is never money at all. Until corruption is eradicated from the Supreme Court, it will never improve.

  1. Absence of Government Manipulation

To improve the Supreme Court, no government should interfere with the rulings of the court. This is why it is independent. Government should not control it. Give the court what will enable it to function effectively and leave it to do its work.

  1. Impartial Decisions

To improve the Supreme Court, its decisions must be impartial. Impartiality is one of the things that make the Supreme Court Justices infallible. They must not bow to anything that is far from the truth. They must pass all judgments without fear or favour no matter whose ox is gored.

  1. Internet Supply

It is sad to hear that Justices of the Supreme Court do not have an uninterrupted internet supply to their residences and their chambers. This should not be in this modern world. Many people no longer go to the libraries. This is because they cannot get what they want in the libraries.

With the internet available to the Justices of the Supreme Court, they can conduct all forms of research without leaving their seat. The Federal Government ought to have known this. The internet is one of the tools that will enable the Justices to carry out their work. Therefore, depriving them of internet supply is incapacitating them and nobody should blame them for not doing well. They are not doing well because they have no tools to work with.

  1. Power Supply

Like internet supply, the Justices should always have a power supply. Of course, their computers cannot work without a power supply. It is high time the Federal Government provides them solar power supply. The Federal Government knows that Nigerian electricity is not steady. A solar power supply is always there twenty-four-seven, with no interruption whatsoever.

  1. Vehicles for Justices

It is sad to note that the Justices of the Supreme Court do not have serviceable vehicles, vehicles that can lead them to wherever they are going, not vehicles that will stop them on the way.Npower Recruitment

Justices of the Supreme Court going to work on public transport is forbidden. How can they meet up? If the Federal Government is not ready for a Supreme Court, then let it scrap the Supreme Court. If it is ready for a Supreme Court, then it must put everything about the Supreme Court in order. Since it knows how to borrow money so well, let it borrow to service the Supreme Court.

Conclusion

To say is one thing, to do is another thing. The Supreme Court, as a last resort court for Nigerians, should not be left in shambles. Its shame is Nigeria’s shame. Its glory is Nigeria’s glory. Therefore, we all should do all that is within our reach to see that the Supreme Court in Nigeria can compete with any other Supreme Court elsewhere.
