Why is my NIN showing invalid?

There are three major reasons why you are receiving the invalid NIN error when trying to link your NIN to your SIM:

  • BVN generated NIN
  • NIN acquired a long time ago
  • Newly registered NIN
  • NIMC issues

BVN generated NIN

If you are opening a bank account for the first time and you don’t have a NIN. Once your Bank Verification Number (BVN) is generated, you’ll be given a National Identification Number (NIN) as well. How to Write NYSC Relocation Letter With Samples

That sounds great, right? Because it seems like it has saved you the stress of visiting a NIMC enrolment centre for NIN registration. If you thought that, then you are wrong.

The reason you are experiencing the error is that NIMC has warned Nigerians not to depend on the NIN generated from their BVN saying that it’s invalid up until it has been updated at an approved NIMC enrolment centre. How to Get Married to a Doctor in Nigeria

What should I do? If you have a BVN-generated NIN, simply carry the NIN to any NIMC Enrolment centre closest to you and tell the agent or official on duty that you’d like to validate your NIN. Once it gets validated, the error will be cleared.

NIN acquired a long time ago

The second reason why you may be experiencing the invalid NIN error is that your NIN was acquired or gotten a long time ago.Npower recruitment

It’s not like there’s a problem with registering your NIN a long time ago, the problem is with the NIN portal as it may be that the NIN you registered hasn’t been validated yet.

In this case, you don’t have to panic. Rather, what you should do is take the NIN to a NIMC enrolment centre closest to you and request verification.

Newly registered NIN

After registering for NIN at an approved NIMC enrolment centre, you’ll be given a slip carrying your tracking ID and you’ll be asked to return on a specific date (usually between 1-5 working days) to collect your NIN.

When you return to acquire your NIN on the specific date you were told, your NIN slip carrying your NIN will be given to you.

Now, the problem with newly registered NIN is, that it’s usually not activated the day you receive the NIN slip which means you’ll not be able to use it to do anything for a while.WAEC result

Why is that the case? This happens because the NIMC requires time to prove the validity of the details registered. After all your details have been validated you won’t face the invalid issue again.

What can I do in this case? You can visit the NIMC enrolment centre where your registration was carried out and ask the NIMC official how long it’ll take before you’ll be able to fully use your newly registered NIN. You’ll be given a time frame (usually less than two weeks) and after the time frame, you’ll be able to use your NIN without issues.JAMB form

NIMC issues

During your NIN enrolment or registration, you’ll be asked to provide some details such as your BVN, name, and other demographics. If you input incorrect data and NIMC notices the incorrect information your NIN won’t be activated which means you won’t be able to use the NIN generated hence the invalid error message.

In this case, what you should do is take your NIN slip to any NIMC Enrolment Centre closest to you and tell the NIMC official on duty that you’d like to correct the data on your NIN slip. You’ll be told the next steps to follow and once that’s done, your NIN will be verified and activated.JAMB Result
