2. Raw materials of detergent powder

Detergent powder ingredients – These are the materials which you will need to make a powder detergent;

  1. Caustic soda
  2. Light soda ash
  3. Kaolin
  4. Palm kernel oil
  5. Sodium sulphate
  6. Sulphuric acid
  7. Hydrogen peroxide
  8. Ammonia solution
  9. Colour
  10. Perfume

You can get these materials who from a nearby market even though most of them may have local names given to them in the market, so it is better to go to a popular market in the capital city.

3. Equipment needed

There are a list of equipment which you will need to make your production a success, without these equipment, you cannot make your powder detergent, these are;

  1. 2 fermenting tanks or 2 large rubber bowls
  2. Drying machine
  3. Hydrometer
  4. Grinding machine or grater
  5. Mixing tank or Bucket
  6. Scale or measuring cup
  7. Mixer or a Mixing stick
  8. Rubber gloves

Procedure

  1. Put your caustic soda into one of the fermenting tanks. Add four litres of water. Stir thoroughly; then cover tightly and leave to ferment for 2days.
  2. Put the light soda ash, kaolin and sodium sulphate into the fermenting tank and add 3 litres of water. Stir thoroughly, cover tightly and keep aside for 24 hours to allow for fermentation.
  3. After about 2 days, set up the heating system and pour in the palm kernel oil. You can also use groundnut or vegetable oil. Add colour and allow it to heat. Make sure you heat properly and then allow it to cool.
  4. Set up the mixer and gradually pour in the fermented caustic soda.
  5. Gradually add the fermented light soda ash as you continue mixing
  6. Add the sulphuric acid gradually as the mixing continues
  7. Then add the hydrogen peroxide and ammonia solution as you continue to mix
  8. Add your perfume and mix continuously for about 5 minutes. Allow it to stay for about 5 hours for the mixture to settle.
  9. After settling, transfer the mixture to the drying machine and allow to get dry
  10. Grind the mixture after it is all dried up and then package for usage or sale.

4. Best location for the business

Your location should be in a densely populated area so as to get the right number customers. You can do this from the comfort of your home if you wish to start on a small scale, But if you wish to start on a medium or large scale then you need to get your own space.

Choose somewhere within the capital city of the state you reside in and it should be around where the population is reasonably high.

5. Funding needed

This depends on the way you want to start, if you are starting small or producing for home use, it will not cost you much. But if you want to start producing in commercial quantity, then you need more funds. You can access loans from the banks, provided you have collateral or startup from your available savings.

6. Registration of Business

You will need a name for your product to make it classy and unique, that is why your business has to be registered by the corporate affairs commission (CAC), So as to give your brand a distinct name. This approach will help you carve a space for you in the detergent industry.

7. Packaging/ Distribution/Marketing

In this business, your packaging has to matter a lot; you have to give your product an attractive packaging so as to make it unique and different from others, the difference makes you stand out as far as your product is good.

In the aspect of distribution and marketing, this is where the big work is. After producing and packaging, you have to push your goods into the market to make them sell, to make them seen by the customers and then bought by anyone who likes it.
