The NYSC Community development (CDS) often called the NYSC secondary assignment is a compulsory assignment that every corps member must be involved in. It is one of the four Cardinal Programs of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. This particular assignment allows corps member to contribute positively to the development of their host Community during their one year national service.
The CDS program designed to help balance the nation’s rural-urban development through various development schemes executed by the corps members. As a Corps You are expected to take part in the Community development Service programme. The CDS program is divided into several categories, which you can choose from. Classification of the NYSC CDS Group
The NYSC CDS programme can be classified into 3 categories namely:
- Personal/Individual Community Development Service (Personal CDS)
- Group Community Development Service (Group CDS)
- Collaborative Community Development Service (Collaborative CDS)Know Your NYSC CDS
Corps members are expected to take part in any of the CDS programe. A single day will be set aside for CDS activities every week. On the CDS day, corps member are not expected to attend to any duties at their Place of Primary Assignment, but rather, they are expected to dedicate the day to the execution of their CDS project.
1. Personal/Individual CDS
Personal CDS involves the execution of projects/programmes in the host community by individual corps members. The project or programme executed should be based in the community needs. Corps member can take part in both personal and group CDS programme to make greater impact in the community. Personal CDS is not compulsory, however, if executed properly, it could earn you some high esteem and rewards from the federal government and the host community.Information Guide Nigeria
Possible projects that can be executed under personal CDS include:
- Building of toilets, bridges, classrooms, incinerators, game facilities for schools, etc.
- Establishment of school libraries, ICT laboratories, extra-moral classes, charity work, vocational training for unemployed youths, etc.

2. Group CDS
Group CDS are projects and programmes executed by a group of Corps members. The NYSC group CDS is a compulsory programme. Hence, you are expected to join one of the available CDS groups. Failure to partake in the group CDS will incur sanctions from the NYSC board. Your local government inspector will be in charge of assigning you to a CDS group. It is usually done according to your filed of study/expertise.

The Corps legal aid group offers free legal services to the less privileged, including prison inmates, victims of denials and violation of rights. They also help sensitise the public on the fundamental human rights.
The following activities are carried out by the corps legal aid group:
- Advocacy
- Prison visits
- Legal services to inmates and indigents of the community
- Public lecture on fundamental human rights
Sports Group
The NYSC CDS sport group creates an avenue for healthy rivalry among corps members and their host Community. They help create the awareness and benefits of living healthy through the participation of one form of physical activity or the other. They are also tasked with identifying talents within corps members.
The following activities are carried out by the Sport group:
- Organizing and participating in sport competitions
- Identifying and training members of the host community
- Introduction of new sporting activities to host communities

Cultural and Tourism Group (Band, Dance, Drama & Tourism)
This group promotes the Nigerian arts and culture, and also helps to disseminate vital socio-economic and political problems and prospects.
The following activities are carried out by the cultural and tourism group:
- Set up theatre groups
- Identify talents
Education Development Group (Mass Literacy, Adult Education, Extra Murals ICT)
The education development group helps to enhance the standard of education in their host Community. They also offer career guidance and counselling for students and youths in the community.
The following activities are carried out by the Education development group:
- Create a Campaign against Illiteracy
- Organize Extra-mural classes for Adults.
- Organize several in-school programmes
Environmental Protection and Sanitation Group (EPSG)
This group helps promote and sustain a healthy environment within their host community. They help create awareness on sustainable environment management and regeneration.
The following activities are carried out by the Environmental Protection and sanitation group:
- Tree planting
- Sanitation
- Drainage Control

Editorial/Publicity Group
This group helps compliment the activities of the NYSC PRU, by disseminating information to the host Community when needed.
The following activities are carried out by the Editorial/publicity group:
- Presentations through mass media to enlighten the community on socio-cultural education.
Road Safety Group
This group contributes to the safety of public roads in their host communities.
The following activities are carried out by the Road safety group:

- Establishment of road safety clubs in school.
Reproductive Health & HIV/AIDS Group

- Sensitization and Campaign on HIV/AIDS
Anti-Corruption Group
This group is tasked with helping the EFCC and ICPC to eradicate corruption through innovative campaigns.

- Sensitization in their host community
- Creation of awareness in schools and organizations
- Establishment of Anti-Corruption Corps members in schools.
Service Delivery Group (Attitudinal Change, Re-Branding)
This group helps sensitise the community on service delivery and good work ethics.
The following activities are carried out by the service delivery group:
- Training
- Sensitization

Group discussions on value re-orientation MDGs
This group is tasked with the actualisation of the 8 goals of MDGs.
The following activities are carried out by the re-orientation MDGs group:
- Advocacy and Mentoring of the host community.
Medical and Health Services Group (Red Cross, Breast Without Spot, Polio Plus, etc.)
This group offers medical services to corps members and their host community.
The following activities are carried out by the Medical and health service group:
- Health and wellness outreach
- First Aid administration.
- Establishment of Community based clinic
- Setting up of clinic for the NYSC Secretariat
Drug Free and Quality Control Group (NDLEA, NAFDAC, SON)
This group is tasked with the eradication of fake and adulterated foods and drugs. They also help create awareness on the health risks of drug abuse.
The following activities are carried out by the Drug free and quality control group:

- Establishment of drug free clubs in the host community Schools
- Ensuring linkages with the host Communities.
Agro-Allied Group
This group is tasked with supporting agro-allied activities in their host communities, and promote better food production.
The following are activities of the agro-allied group:
- Demonstrating farms and Extension Services to host communitiesWAEC Result

- Advocacy for farmers
- Teaching new farming techniques to communities
- Establishment of young farmers clubs
3. Collaborative CDS
This type of CDS programme involves the partnership of National and Non-Governmental organisations with other establishments to implement development programmes in the community. Corps member are usually involved as volunteers in this programme.
