Apple has recently released a software patch to tackle a major security vulnerability.

According to the researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, a malicious file was sent to the phone of a Saudi Activist via the iMessage instant-messaging and later, the phone was hacked by the Pegasus spyware which according to them was developed by Isreal’s NSO Group.

Citizen Lab researcher Bill Marczak said after the vulnerability was found on 7 September, they immediately alerted Apple, adding that the activist phone had been infected back in March.

As reported by THE INDEPENDENT NEWS, a global media consortium published a report in July on the use of Pegasus as a spy, revealing that the phone of the Fiancee of Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi was infected with the software just four days after his death.

As reported, Citizen Lab alleged that their findings undermine the Israeli firm’s assertion that it sells software to law enforcement officials for use against criminals and terrorists and called on customers to make sure Pegasus is not misused.

Bill Marczak however stressed that they are not attributing the attack to Saudi Government and the NSO Group has added that it will continue providing tools that will fight terrorism and crime.

THE INDEPENDENT NEWS reveals that Apple in a blog post has said that it is offering a blog a security update for iPhones and iPads because a maliciously crafted PDF file could lead to hacking.

According to Apple Security Chief, Ivan Krstic also issued a statement saying that after identifying the vulnerability used by this exploit for iMessage, Apple rapidly developed and deployed a fix in iOS 14.8 to protect our users adding that although it is not certain how many Apple users might have been attacked using this vulnerability, it is will not see it as a threat overwhelming majority of it users. jamb result
