A hysterectomy is a surgical operation that removes the uterus and can remove areas of painful endometrial tissue.
Hayes has fought publicly for a wider understanding of endometriosis, which affects approximately one in ten women and can cause incapacitating pain and heavy periods.
The day before winning her first WSL title in 2015, Hayes had a procedure in hospital to remove a contraceptive coil which had been inserted to relieve the symptoms of the illness.
