The relationship between Mount and Lampard is one born out of mutual respect and appreciation. It started at Derby – where both spent the 2018/19 campaign – and continued at Stamford Bridge. It will always be remembered that the 22-year-old stepped up like no other player during the final weeks of Lampard’s tenure.

Lampard admitted the last term he sees some of himself in Mount: the drive, determination, ability to overcome pressure, and silence doubters. He also felt the Chelsea midfielder could follow in his footsteps and become a reliable goalscoring presence in the side.

With more than half of the campaign still to play, it’s likely Mount – just as Lampard did – breaks the ten-goal barrier during his third season in the Chelsea side.

The challenge is then to repeat and improve; to hone his goalscoring craft further; to become the heir to Lampard many expected.
