Every word Ben Chilwell said on mental fatigue, Chelsea goals, Marcos Alonso challenge

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has been up with the media ahead of the Champions League clash with Malmo and here is what he had to say:

Massive change from start of season, how was that start for you?

It is obviously frustrating because as a footballer you want to be playing week in week out. It’s what you enjoy, stepping out on the pitch and playing football. But you have to train well every day and support the team, which is the main thing.

When you have a squad like we do here, with 25 world class players and two or three people fighting in every position, you have to understand you are not going to play in every match. Just support the group and train hard so when you get your chance, you are ready.

Did you have any doubts in that period?

No doubts at all. When you train hard every day, and of course as a football player you have to have confidence in your own ability. I was just keen that I would train hard every day so that when I did get my opportunity I would give the manager a headache.

When I got the chance to play my best and give my best for the team, and hopefully then get more opportunities and give him as much of a headache as possible.

Tuchel said you were feeling “mentally tired” earlier this season. You recognise that?

It’s a difficult one. Coming off the back of a summer when you have been disappointed, where you wanted to play. It’s the Euros in your home country so of course, everyone is going to be disappointed when they don’t play in that. Coming back to Chelsea I felt I was in a good place to help the team.

Of course Marcos started the season very well and was here for the whole of pre-season. When you have two or three brilliant players in each position, fighting for 11 shirts, you have to be realistic. I knew I had to be patient and bide my team and support the group.

That’s a sign here of the fact we have such a strong group and doing well at the moment is because there are no egos in this squad. There is a group of players who want to work hard and when whoever gets the chance to play gets their opportunity they are ready.Information Guide Nigeria

Goalscoring must be the best therapy for that and you’ve been smashing them in recently?

It definitely helps. Scoring goals as a defender isn’t something I get to do a lot, so when I do score it’s a nice feeling. Thankfully last month I was able to help the team with a few goals.

I got my first goal for England which was an amazing feeling as well. It’s part of my game the manager now has helped me with most and improved me most. Getting the opportunities in and around the box to be more of a goal threat and contribute more with goals and assists.

Are you more of a midfielder these days than a wing-back?

With the way the manager wants us to play, we probably do spend more time in attacking positions. Especially in the past few months, he has encouraged us a lot more to not just stay on the touchline but to play with freedom.

We have a brilliant defensive unit behind you and brilliant players behind who can cover. Express yourself, enjoy yourself, help the team score goals and get assists. At the moment with the wing-backs, we are really enjoying doing that.

Your trophy cabinet is getting full, Premier League continues to grow in quality, keeps you on your toes?

The quality we have got in the league, across numerous teams where a lot of teams have strengthened this season in different areas. Look at the games and the quality is improving every season. All we can do is focus on ourselves and we are confident in the group we have here, that if we work hard and stay hungry to improve and have success, we are confident we can bring more trophies to this club.

Also, is Mo Salah the best player in the world right now? Though you do have some good players in your squad…

Of course, Salah is a brilliant player having a brilliant season and in the past month, he has scored some great goals. There are brilliant players in our team as well, the likes of Jorginho who has won pretty much everything there is to win in the past year and half, N’Golo… a lot of world-class players in our team. Salah has been brilliant this year.

Warning to the rest of the Premier League that when your strikers do click, it’s over for them?

We are clicking pretty well at the moment anyway as a team. The manager is very keen on telling us as a team we attack together, defend together. He wants defenders to score goals and wants attackers to do the defensive side of the job.JAMB Result
