Qatar, on the other hand, is eager to get the tournament started by playing Ecuador in the opening match of their first World Cup. The alteration to the schedule, which will have an impact on other World Cup fixtures, is under consideration by Fifa, according to The Athletic.

Hosts Qatar are keen to begin the tournament at the Al Bayt Stadium, the newly-constructed 60,000-seater arena that cost around £650million to build. However, a change to the opening match regulations meant they would have to make a special request.

From 1974 through 2002, the opening match was always contested by the reigning champion. However, the previous champions were no longer automatically qualified from 2006 to 2018, hence it was determined that the opening match should feature the host nation.

In the opening game of the 2018 World Cup, Russia defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0 to continue their unbeaten streak when playing on their home field. The last time teams from outside the host country competed in the opening match was in 1998, when Brazil defeated Scotland 2-1 at Stade de France.JAMB Result
