In addition, Bradford City – the last fourth tier outfit to make it to a League Cup Final back in 2013 – host Middlesbrough who themselves mark the 20-year anniversary of their only triumph in this competition back in 2004.
Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers, victors back in 2002, entertain Cardiff City. And Mansfield Town – managed by two-time League Cup winner in Nigel Clough who happens to have a penchant for a cup run in this particular competition – welcome Peterborough United to Nottinghamshire.NYSC Portal

The reigning champions
Manchester United’s defence of the Carabao Cup begins in Round Three as they face league rivals Crystal Palace to kick off the competition on home soil live on Sky Sports.JAMB Portal
Last season, under the stewardship of boss Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils ended their silverware drought as they beat Newcastle United in the 2023 Final under the famous arch. The Carabao Cup marked United’s first trophy – and a first major honour in six years, having last won the competition in 2017 – since the arrival of the Dutchman.
Other top-flight teams to enter the competition at this stage include Premier League champions, Manchester City, record nine-time winners Liverpool, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa and West Ham United.

Run it back
As Aston Villa host Everton in Round Three, it brings flashbacks of the historic 1977 League Cup Final. Over four decades ago, the Villains beat the Toffees after two re-runs – the first and only time it has happened in the history of the competition.
After three games in total, Villa lifted the League Cup, having played out a goalless draw in the first leg at Wembley Stadium, then drawing 1-1 at Hillsborough in the first replay, before the West Midlands side eventually won 3-2 at Old Trafford after extra-time to cap off a dramatic Final.

Meanwhile, last year’s runners-up Newcastle United and eight-time winners Manchester City will play out a televised repeat of the 1976 showpiece when the Sky Blues overcame the Magpies in a 2-1 win at the old Wembley as Dennis Tueart’s famous overhead kick won it for City in the second half.

Star performances
One of the shocks of Round Two took place at Bramall Lane as League One side Lincoln City saw off Premier League opposition Sheffield United. The Imps prevailed on penalties to knock out the Blades and advance.JAMB Result
It was decided on penalties on the night with Lincoln winning 3-2 on spot-kicks, and keeper Lukas Jensen was the hero for the visitors, keeping a clean sheet in 90 minutes and making two saves in the shootout, and his individual display earned the stopper the Player of the Round accolade.
Mark Kennedy’s men lock horns with West Ham United next up as the Imps look to conquer another top-tier team in their quest to book a place in Round four.

Making a splash
Other Clubs looking to cause an upset in Round Three include League Two outfit Salford City. The Ammies have already seen off two Championship sides en-route, beating Preston North End on penalties in Round One before seeing off Leeds United, also on spot-kicks, in Round Two. Neil Wood’s men take on Burnley in a bid to reach Round Four for the first time.
Meanwhile, there’s the potential for Exeter City to claim a Premier League scalp when they host Luton Town whose first and only major honour came in this competition in 1988 when they overcame Arsenal in one of the greatest Finals in the competition’s history.
And there are a handful of other EFL Clubs facing higher ranked opposition as Ipswich Town face off against Wolverhampton Wanderers; Bournemouth play Stoke City; Liverpool entertain Leicester City; and Fulham go head-to-head with Norwich City.
