As a result of a pre-tournament injury, Benzema was pulled from the squad, delivering a blow to Deschamps’ ambitions in the Middle East.
Despite rumors that Benzema could rejoin the team, Deschamps denied the opportunity to do so as France lost to Argentina in the tournament final.
Benzema was offended by the call, and he subsequently announced his retirement from international football at the end of 2022.
“I’m not interested in the controversy, it belongs to the past for me”, as per an interview with Telefoot.
