Ronaldo was the first player to be welcomed as the playmaker entered the changing room, standing next to the entrance. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who had held out his hand for a handshake, was momentarily left hanging, though, as Fernandes appeared to shove past him.

After finally greeting Ronaldo, Fernandes lightly touched his arm before scurrying off to talk to other Portugal team members.

The club’s management is upset and considering legal action in response to the rifts produced by Ronaldo’s interview with Morgan. One incident had the forward insisting that he had been misled.

He said: “Yes I felt betrayed and I felt like some people don’t want me here, not only this year but last year too.”

When speaking about Ten Hag, the veteran striker said: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me. If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.
